KC shuts off its flow of bottled water
Ten years ago, Kansas City officials announced with great fanfare that they would start bottling municipal tap water for sale. But the days are now numbered for City of Fountains Premium Drinking Water. The City Council has endorsed the water department’s decision to stop selling its bottled water beginning Oct. 1. Kansas City thus joins San Francisco, St. Louis and other city governments trying to slow the flood of plastic bottles into landfills and encouraging people to drink water directly from the faucet or drinking fountain. “We’ll give you all a nice jug to go to the tap and put your good clean tap water in,” acting Water Services Director John Franklin told the City Council. “We just need to be out of this (bottling) business.” ... bottled water’s popularity has dropped as environmental awareness has risen.
