RE: NORTHERN MICHIGAN HOSPITAL STRIKE

After “holding the line” for over 100 days, the Nurses at Northern Michigan Hospital are as determined as ever to have their first Union contract. This dedicated group of nurses have braved sub-zero weather on the picket line for weeks now and have been forced to leave their families to find work at hospitals throughout the State, yet they remain committed to do whatever necessary to have their voices heard.

The National Labor Relations Board has gone to complaint on several unfair labor practice charges with others still pending. Local 406 was also successful in a charge against Munson Medical Center in Traverse City for refusing to hire striking nurses from Northern Michigan Hospital. We are currently in negotiations with Munson on first contract negotiations on behalf of their Maintenance and Service employees. It appears Munson has joined ranks with Northern Michigan Hospital in an attempt to deny employment to the striking nurses. The Labor Board issued complaint against Munson on February 20th.

A meeting was called by the Michigan Employment Relations Commission in Lansing on February 18th where once again the Hospital refused to negotiate. On February 24th, they implemented a portion of the contract that addressed increases in wages and benefits. They did not implement the many proposals that actually take away rights and benefits currently enjoyed. Charges have been filed on this also.

The community support remains strong and the media reports are improving. Congressman Bart Stupak sent a second letter to the Hospital reprimanding them for not dealing with their Nurses at a time of such critical shortages. The local nursing school has refused to send their nursing students to this hospital for training and instead sends them to Charlevoix (20 miles south of Petoskey). We have been meeting with doctors and some of them are threatening to pull their practices from the hospital until the strike is settled. And more than one lawsuit is being filed against the hospital over quality of care issues.

The support from President Hoffa and Teamster Locals throughout the country has been critical in maintaining this picket line. Those of you who have spent time with us on the picket line know how much it means to the Nurses.

NOTE:
The Valentines Day Dance in Traverse City raised over $5900 to date with donations coming in daily. Thanks to so many for the support given to these efforts to assist and strengthen the nurses in Petoskey, Michigan
