TODD TUTTLE'S SPOT
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Religious Right Kicks Puppy

The word games and control techniques used by the Religious Right are serious but not insurmountable.

"I was recruited into the Religious Right when I was a boy by a public high school teacher.

I am now spending my life helping others out of it."

Seattle, WA- A new children’s book titled "Spot", came under attack last week by Focus on the Family and other prominent Religious Right groups who claim the book teaches "false tolerance."

In a press release issued by Focus on the Family, pro-family experts say "parents should preemptively teach children to reject the false tolerance Spot teaches." The book’s author , Todd Tuttle, is appalled that his simple story of a dog who is taught to hate spotless dogs, and then loses his own spots, is being maligned.

"It is unfortunate," Tuttle says, "but not atypical for the Religious Right to criticize anything that teaches the lesson that we should accept and celebrate diversity. I was once part of the Religious Right myself. More disturbing is the fact that they are commenting on a book that they have probably never even read."

Tuttle, a former Baptist minister and now openly gay civil rights advocate, thinks that because the message of tolerance found in"Spot" can be applied to gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered people, the Religious Right is severely threatened by the simple parable’s universal application.

"The purpose of this book," Tuttle says, "is to represent environments where intolerance and hatred are taught to children by adults. Spot is taught by his parents to hate spotless dogs. In fact, the whole town of "Barksville" where Spot lives, hates spotless dogs. One day, Spot loses his own spots and has to face the rejection of his family and friends. The rejection is based on factors beyond Spot’s control. And so it is with the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered experience, among others."

Peter LaBarbera, with the Culture and Family Institute, said in the press release, "They’re setting kids up for a pro-homosexual message which they will get, probably in junior high or high school." LaBarbera also believes that, "People are not just born into a separate category. That’s the myth that gay activists would like you to believe, but it is not true."

Tuttle knows that the word games and control techniques used by the Religious Right are serious but not insurmountable. "I was recruited into the Religious Right when I was a boy by a public high school teacher. I am now spending my life helping others out of it."
