THE AFA TRAVERSE CITY AGENDA

Introduction | Notable Events/Information | TC Yes Unplugged | Smoke & Mirrors | Legal | Comments
NOVEMBER 06, 2001 Traverse City defeats Proposal 1

Of the hate crimes reported to the FBI in 1999, 1,411 incidents were attributed to prejudice against the victim's religion; 1,317, against his or her sexual orientation; 829 against ethnic or national origin; and 19 against disabilities. [source: Federal Bureau of Investigation]

The Board and Staff of We Are Traverse City, Inc. are proud of our city for seeing through the confusion surrounding this issue. Through our votes, Traverse City has indicated that we do not want an exclusionary political system or any new laws.

For a free society, fundamentalism poses the most basic of paradoxes: It flourishes by tolerance, but tolerance is what it cannot tolerate.

We support and defend any person's Constitutional right to practice any religion of her or his choice—we do not support the efforts of extremist organizations to amend our Constitution and/or City Charter to legislate their religious beliefs and practices—at the expense of others—in effect creating a "state imposed religion." In recent times Jews, blacks, women, gay men, lesbians, Japanese, Muslims, and other minorities have all had to bear the weight of institutionalized oppression and discrimination in the name of God and country. It is our right, and in fact our duty as citizens to uphold our Constitutionally guaranteed "freedom of religion" and "freedom from religion" in the United States of America. Freedom is precious—embrace it—protect it.

The Board and staff of We Are Traverse City, Inc. will continue to remain vigilant and inform you of any bias motivated hate crimes or actions against any citizen of Traverse City, and support efforts to teach peace, tolerance, respect for all expressions of faith, understanding and justice — creating a safe and livable community for all.

NOVEMBER 07, 2001 “AFA TC” Critical of Safe Schools Organization
(AFA TC was formerly known as TC Yes)

Fresh on the heels of the American Family Association's anti-gay ballot defeat, AFA TC is now focusing their message against Safe School programs designed to end the cycle of violence in K-12 schools in NW Michigan. It is our hope that all viewpoints may be heard and a sensible community based safe schools program developed that protects "all" young people.
